What the Guidelines Actually Call For

The photograph needs to be recent, taken within the last six months, and should genuinely reflect current appearance rather than an older image pulled from storage. Facing the camera directly with eyes open and mouth closed matters, alongside a face that fills most of the frame against a plain, light-coloured background free of patterns or clutter.

Small Exceptions Worth Knowing

Glasses remain acceptable provided the eyes stay clearly visible without tint or reflection interfering. Religious head coverings are permitted as well, so long as no part of the face from chin to forehead gets obscured. Beyond that, the final image simply needs to stay sharp, evenly lit, and free of filters, borders, or pixelation that might otherwise delay processing.
